If you’re sitting here panicking that Christmas is only couple weeks away, then let me take one decision off your plate….Christmas morning breakfast! We all want to enjoy a cozy, and delicious breakfast that day, but we want it to be simple. This Apple Cream Cheese Sourdough French Toast Bake is exactly that!

This dreamy breakfast starts with a loaf of fluffy homemade sourdough bread. You then slice it into cubes, and coat it in a lightly sweetened egg and milk mixture. Layer that in a baking dish with drops of vanilla cream cheese filling. Then to finish it off, you top it with a spiced apple mixture that gives you those warm and comforting flavours. Serve it up warm with maple syrup and everyone will be in love.

What I love about this recipe is that it can be made almost completely in advance. You have a couple options if you don’t want to make it all that morning. Option 1 is putting the whole casserole together, then storing it in the fridge over night unbaked. Option 2, you can make the casserole and bake it just a little underdone the day before. Store it in the fridge then bake a little longer in the morning so it is nice and fresh. Both will work, so do whichever you prefer!

Tips for Making Apple Cream Cheese Sourdough French Toast Bake

  1. Use a loaf of sourdough bread that is a couple days old. This will make it easier to slice into cubes, and will always help prevent the bread from going soggy. It will become tender and flavourful, white still holding its structure.
  2. When you are layering the bread and the fillings, I recommend putting most of the cream cheese mixture in the middle of the French toast. I like to add a few blobs on top for looks, but it will stay the creamiest if it is tucked in the middle.
  3. Allow the French toast bake to cool for about 10 minutes before serving. This will give it just enough time to set nicely, without it getting cold.

Apple Cream Cheese Sourdough French Toast Bake Ingredients

Sourdough Bread– This recipe uses 1 large loaf. If you do not bake sourdough at home you can buy a loaf, however homemade is always better ;).

Eggs– An essential part of french toast.

Milk– You can use whole milk, 2% or even skim milk if you like. I like whole mild for extra creaminess.

Brow Sugar– There is a bit of brown sugar added to the French toast, but I kept it on the lighter side so it isn’t too sweet and can be enjoyed with maple syrup on top.

Cream Cheese– Use a brick style cream cheese.

Apples– Any kind of apple you like will work for this recipe. My favourites are ambrosia or pink lady.

Butter– Salted or unsalted works.

Cinnamon– A must when making anything apple flavor.

Nutmeg– I love the addition of a touch of nutmeg for that apple pie flavor. You can skip this if you don’t like it.

Vanilla– This gets added to the French toast and cream cheese filling for extra flavor.

The Steps

  1. Preheat your oven to 375F and grease a 9×13 baking dish.
  2. Start by beating the cream cheese, powdered sugar and vanilla with an electric mixer until soft and smooth. Set aside.
  3. Next, stir together all of the apple filling ingredients in a medium size bowl.
  4. Then dice up the loaf of bread into cubes. About a 1-2 inches in size. Place them in a large bowl.
  5. Add the eggs, milk, cinnamon, brown sugar and salt to a bowl and whisk until well combined.
  6. Take that egg mixture and pour it over top of the cubed bread and gently toss it all together with a large spoon.
  7. After all the bread is soaked, lay half of that bread into the prepare baking dish.
  8. Then, take small spoonfuls of the cream cheese filling and scatter them over the bread. I like to leave a couple spoonfuls of the mixture for putting on top at the end.

  1. Follow this with spreading half of the apple mixture over the bread and cream cheese filling.
  2. Finally, repeat those steps with the remaining bread (making sure to pour all of the liquid from the bowl over the bread), followed by a couple more drops of cream cheese mixture and the rest of the apples.
  3. Bake for 45 minutes or until golden on top, and set throughout.
  4. Allow the french toast to cool for 5-10 minutes before slicing.
  5. Serve topped with maple syrup and whipped cream if you like and enjoy!

Notes

* You do not have to use homemade sourdough if you do not make bread. You can use a store bought loaf , but just make sure you get real sourdough, preferably from a bakery.

* To make this the night before, follow all of the steps the same but before baking it, cover it with plastic wrap and place in the fridge over night. Remove from the fridge and bake as directed. It may take a few minutes longer to bake since it is starting cold.

* You can also fully bake this ahead of time and store it in the freezer if you want to do it well in advance. Simply allow it to thaw, then reheat it in the oven.

  1. I made this for Christmas morning today. I made it last night and kept it in the fridge to just pop into the oven this morning.

This morning, I took it out & let it sit upside down for a few minutes to get some of that egg moved around & And baked it.

The entire dish was devoured!! People asked for seconds and the recipe !

Will definitely be making it again for Christmas next year
