Burger bowls are all the rage right now. You can’t go onto a social media platform without seeing them! They seemed quite simple, so I wanted to put my spin on them and use ground venison to make it even better. Whether you have ground venison, ground moose, ground elk or even just beef in your freezer you need to make this recipe.

These Venison Burger Bowls are incredibly easy to make. You start by making some fries. I like sweet Japanese sweet potatoes but you can use regular potatoes too. Then you brown up the meat with a few spices and I like some bbq sauce in there for extra flavor. Top that meat with gooey cheddar cheese then serve it up with the fries, lettuce, all your favourite toppings and my flavourful burger sauce!

I love these bowls because they are made with ingredients most people always have on hand. They are packed full of protein, and are a delicious way to get the whole family eating a nourishing meal. Because, I mean who doesn’t love a saucy burger!!

Tips for Making Perfect Venison Burger Bowls

  1. If you are making homemade fries, make sure you season them well! This is a great spot to add extra flavor to your bowls. I love using a sweet and spicy bbq rub when I make homemade fries.
  2. When making the burger sauce, I recommend following the recipe then tasting it and adjusting anything to your liking! It is great as it is, but maybe you want a bit of extra mustard, or some extra pickle juice etc.
  3. For the meat, I recommend adding the cheese before it is fully finished cooking. Ground game meat can get dry if it is overcooked, so adding the cheese sooner than later will give it time to melt without over cooking the meat.

Venison Burger Bowl Ingredients

Ground Venison– As mentioned above you can use ground venison, moose, elk or even beef.

Fries– These can be store bought or homemade. You can do sweet potato or regular fries.

Cheddar Cheese– I like a nice old cheddar but use whichever is your favorite.

Burger Sauce– This is a combination of mayo, ketchup, sweet relish, dijon mustard and pickle juice.

Lettuce– Shredded ice berg or romaine is best for a nice crunch.

Toppings of your Choice– Pickled red onions, pickles, jalapeños, tomato, caramelized onions, avocado, fried egg etc! Pick any you like.

Barbecue Sauce– I love the addition of some bbq sauce to the meat mixture to keep it juicy and add some extra flavor.

The Steps

  1. Start by preheating your oven to 400F.
  2. Then, take your potato strips and place them in a bowl. Toss them with 2 tbsp of olive oil and your favorite bbq seasoning blend.
  3. Spread the potatoes out on a baking sheet making sure they aren’t over lapping and bake for about 25-30 minutes or until golden. I like to flip them half way through.
  4. Next, heat a skillet over medium high heat, with a drizzle of oil.
  5. Add in the ground meat and brown along with the salt, pepper and garlic powder until almost cooked through.
  6. Then, stir in the bbq sauce, turn the pan down to low, and sprinkle the shredded cheese over the meat.
  7. Place a lid on top and allow the cheese to melt for 1-2 minutes before removing the pan from the heat.
  8. Finally, you are going to stir together all of the burger sauce ingredients, then taste it and add in any extras of any of the condiments if you like.
  9. To plate the bowls, start with a bed of lettuce. Then add some of the fries on top, a serving of the cheesy meat, diced tomatoes, avocado, pickled onions and pickles.
  10. Drizzle some of the burger sauce over top and enjoy!

Notes

* If you don't hunt you can make this recipe with ground beef or even ground chicken.

* The toppings for these burger bowls are totally up to you. Swap out any of the toppings for others that you enjoy.

*These make great leftovers or meal prep, I just suggest keeping the sauce separate until you eat so that the lettuce doesn't go soggy.
