I think it is safe to say that we all make venison tacos. They are easy, quick to throw together and everyone loves them. However, if you are looking to switch up your Mexican night Venison Steak Tostadas are so fun!

Making these is extremely easy. Start by prepping your toppings. I like to do a fresh avocado crema and homemade pico de gallo. Then, move on to searing your choice of steak with your favorite Mexican seasoning blend. While the steaks rest, simply fry up some corn tortillas in a little bit of oil or ghee until golden and crisp. Serve up those crispy tostadas with the avocado crema, sliced steak, pice de Gallo and any other toppings you like.

We love making venison tostadas because you can add all different kinds of toppings to suit your taste buds. They can be ready in about 20 minutes and if you’re making them for the family, everyone gets to choose their own toppings! Make as many as you like and just be sure to store the crispy tostadas separate from the steak and toppings for leftovers.

Tips for making Perfect Steak Tostadas

  1. Whenever you are cooking venison or other wild game steaks it is ideal to cook them rare- medium rare. This means you only want to cook them until the internal temp reaches 120-130F. If you cook wild game steak longer than that it can get tough and dry.
  2. Always make sure you are slicing your steaks against the grain! This helps give the most tender bites possible making it easier and more enjoyable to eat.
  3. For serving, you want to only add the toppings right before you are about to eat, to keep the tostadas crispy!

Venison Steak Tostada Ingredients

Venison Steak– This can be tenderloin, back strap, flat iron etc. Basically any cut of steak you like.

Corn Tortillas– You want corn in order to give to that classic crispy golden texture and flavor.

Avocado– Nice ripe avocados will make the creamiest avocado crema.

Sour Cream– Can sub with plain greek yogurt if you prefer.

Garlic– Fresh garlic goes in both the crema and the pice de Gallo.

Tomatoes– Any firm tomatoes will do.

Onion- White onion gives a nice fresh bite.

Jalapeños– These aren’t a need, but add a bit of kick to the pice de Gallo.

Cilantro– Fresh is what you want.

Lime- Fresh squeeze lime juice is always better than bottled.

Cotija or Feta Cheese– Either work.

The Steps

  1. Start by patting your steak dry, then season them on both sides with any Mexican blend of your choice, then set aside.
  2. Next, make the avocado crema by adding all of the ingredients to a blender or jar with a hand blender and blend until smooth. Taste and add any more salt if needed. Set aside.
  3. Then make the pico de gallo by stirring together all of the ingredients in a medium sized bowl until combined.
  4. Once all the toppings are prepped, heat a skillet over high heat with a couple tbsp of oil or butter.
  5. When it is nice and hot, add the steaks and sear for a couple minutes each side or until the internal temperature reaches 120F for rare or 130F for medium rare.
  6. Remove the steaks from the skillet and let rest for 5-7 minutes.
  7. Finally, while the steaks rest, heat a skillet with a thin layer of high heat oil or ghee. You want it over medium high heat so that it is hot but not scorching.
  8. Add in 1-2 tortillas at a time, and cook for 1-2 minutes per side until golden and crisp.
  9. Remove from the pan, and place on a plate with some paper towel to catch an excess oil. Season with a little sprinkle of salt and repeat this with all the tortillas.
  10. To serve, spread some avocado crema over each tostada, layer on some of the sliced venison steak, top with a spoonful of the pico de gallo and finish with a sprinkle of cotija/feta cheese and any other toppings you like. Enjoy!
