Nachos are everyone’s favorite and when they are made over golden homemade fries, they are even better! I have been making these for a few years now, and every time I make them, I forget just how delicious they are. They are salty, cheesy, packed with protein and a crowd pleaser every time.

To make these venison potato nachos, you start by roasting some homemade potato or sweet potato fries. Once they are golden and crispy, you layer over shredded cheese and tons of ground meat. Place the pan back in the oven until the cheese is gooey. Finish them off with any of your favorite toppings, like tomatoes, jalapeños, beans, onion or pepper. Then, serve them up like you would nachos with sour cream, guacamole and salsa!

I love making these machos because they are a fun meal that takes minimal effort. They are a great way to use up veggies and things that you have in your fridge, and can be made with basically any ground meat you have. This recipe fills that nacho craving but in a more nourishing way!

Tips For Making Venison Potato NAchos

  1. Don’t use too much oil on your potatoes. You want just enough to help the seasoning stick, but if you use too much they won’t go nice and crispy.
  2. When baking the fries, you want them in a single layer. This helps them get evenly browned. Then you can layer them up a bit before you add the cheese and meat.

Venison Potato Nacho Ingredients

Potatoes– You can you russet, Yukon gold, sweet potatoes or yams.

Ground Venison– This can be ground venison , moose, elk, beef etc.

Cheese– I like a nice sharp cheddar, but use your favorite kind of cheddar.

Spices- Chili powder, ground cumin, smoked paprika and garlic powder are what I use. If you prefer to use a per made taco seasoning you can.

Toppings– Diced tomato, red onion, jalapeños, cowboy candy, beans, bell peppers, cilantro etc. Any you like.

Dipping Sauces– Sour cream, salsa, guacamole.

The Steps

  1. Preheat your oven to 415-425F and line a baking sheet with parchment.
  2. Start by slicing the potatoes into long strips about 1/4 inch thick.
  3. Add all the potatoes to a bowl, drizzle with a couple tbsp of olive oil and season with some salt, pepper and garlic powder. Toss to coat.
  4. Then, spread the potato slices over the baking sheet, making sure they are in a single layer.
  5. Bake in the oven for about 25-30 minutes or until desired crispiness, flipping half way through.
  6. While the fries cook, brown the ground meat in a skillet with a couple tbsp of oil over medium high heat.
  7. As the meat starts to cook, add in the salt, garlic, cumin, chili powder and smoked paprika. Continue to cook until the meat is crumbly and cooked through.
  8. Take the baked fries out of the oven, then layer over 2/3 of the shredded cheese.
  9. Add the ground meat on top, some onion and then the remaining cheese.
  10. Place the nachos back in the oven for 5-10 more minutes until gooey.
  11. Finally, sprinkle over your remaining desired toppings and serve with salsa, sour cream and guacamole. Enjoy!
