I love making homemade BBQ sauce because you can use better ingredients and adjust the sweetness exactly to your liking! It is incredibly easy to make, and cans extremely well so you can have homemade BBQ sauce on your shelves year round.

For this Cowboy Candy BBQ Sauce you are adding in the left over brine from making cowboy candy! If you are unaware of what cowboy candy is, it is sweet and spicy pickled jalapenos and the brine holds so much flavor. Making this sauce is as easy as whisking together all of the ingredients, then heating them n the stove and simmering for about 40 minutes. Once you have a nice glossy BBQ sauce, simply ladle it into clean jars, add on the lids and rings and then water bath them for 20 minutes. That’s it!

What I love so much about this BBQ sauce is that it uses such simple ingredients and doesn’t rely on seasonal produce. It is a condiment you will reach for again and again and makes tasty gifts around the holidays as well. You can save your cowboy candy brine to make this sauce right away, or can up your extra brine so you can make this sauce throughout the year.

Tips for Making Cowboy Candy BBQ Sauce

  1. Once you have mixed all the ingredients together and they have cooked down for about 10 minutes, I recommend tasting the sauce. At this point you can adjust any of the spices or add more sweetness if you desire.
  2. Because BBQ sauce is sticky, always wipe down your rims with a paper towel dipped in vinegar before adding the lids. This ensures you get a nice clean seal.

Cowboy Candy BBQ Sauce Ingredients

Tomato Sauce– You can use homemade or canned from the store.

Tomato Paste– A whole small jar is needed.

Cowboy Candy Brine– This is the leftover liquid you have from making cowboy candy. You can also save the liquid from your jars of cowboy candy, if you have already canned it all.

Brown Sugar– I kept this a bit lower in sugar, but you can add more if you want it sweeter.

Honey– This adds a delicious extra sweetness.

Vinegar– White vinegar is what you want.

Molasses– Blackstrap is best.

Worcestershire Sauce– If you are gluten free be sure to get gluten free Worcestershire sauce.

Smoked Paprika– Love the smokey flavor this adds.

Garlic Powder

Onion Powder

Salt- Any fine salt will work.
