Reasons to Build a Barndominium Home

Barndominium style homes are becoming popular in many areas and for good reason. If you have considered building one, here are some key reasons to build a Barndominium as your home!

What is a Barndominium?

There are many opinions floating around the internet as to what a Barndominium home is and it truly isn’t a one size fits all definition. Barndominiums were originally pole barns that were transformed to also include living quarters. They have become popular as new builds and are typically either a post frame structure or stick frame build with metal siding and metal roofing. Perfect for the rancher/farmer, outdoor enthusiast, car lover, or anyone who loves the industrial Barn look!

Here Are Key Reasons to Build a Barndominium Home

#1 You Need a Large Shop/ Garage Space

Barndominiums do not always include a large shop or garage however this can be a huge appeal to many. Whether your hobbies include cars, boats, hunting etc you need space to store it all. Of course, you can always just have a shed or a detached shop from your home but it’s much more convenient to have it in the same building as your home.

You can customize a Barndominium garage to be exactly what you need. Whether that be extra tall over head doors, a drive through bay for when towing trailers, or a bar to hangout with your buddies! The options are truly endless.

We included four doors that go from our living space to our shop for functionality and flow of our home. There is no losing your husband in the shop for hours at a time because you are just a door away from him. Prior to our build my man was always ‘losing his phone’ while working on who knows what in the detached shop. I would have to exit our home to go inform him we’re late for dinner, or if I needed his help. It’s another small gripe, but having him a door away has certainly improved communication.

#2 You Love Open Concept Homes

One of the top reasons to Build a Barndominium Home is for the open floor plan. With the simplistic structure of this style of home, comes the option for an open floor plan that often includes stunning high ceilings. Open concept living can be great for families, entertaining and feeling connected to those that you share your home with. It also allows for design flexibility when decorating your home. For example, you are not stuck with only one spot to put your couch. As we live in our homes, our needs change and its amazing to have a home that can change with you.

Our open concept floor plan in our Barndominium allowed us to have 20′ high ceilings in our great room with an open loft on our second floor that over looks the floor to ceiling fireplace. It is one of my favorite spots in our home. I love that I can be in the kitchen and still feel like im enjoying time with my man while he is in the living room.

#3 You Want a Durable, Low Maintenance Building

Barndomiums typically have metal siding and metal roofing. While this look may not be for everyone, this makes for a durable and low maintenance structure. There is no painting required, you do not have to worry about doing exterior touch ups all the time and its fire resistant. As any home owner knows, the work never ends no matter what kind of home you live in, so being able to cut out some of the exterior work can save both time and money over the years.

We love the look of our metal home and knowing that we had a choice to make our home more fire smart during fire season was a huge bonus! In addition to this our galvanized metal roof allowed us the freedom to collect rain water to recycle for our home, but more on that in another post…

#4 You Have Many Hobbies & Need Storage

If you are one of those people who loves to do it all or have a family that enjoys every activity out there, having space to store equipment can be a major reason to build a Barndominium. Our homes can become cluttered so quickly with sport equipment, toys, tools, the list goes on and on.

Lets be honest, no one ever feels like their garage is big enough!

This was a huge need for us, and with our Barndominium we were able to add meat processing room to our shop, a man cave/lounge area and have ample storage for all of our hobby gear. This helps keep the house feeling calm and comfortable while having our gear stacked in sections.

The list of reasons to build a Barndominium Home can go on and on but if any or all of the ones above apply to you, than a Barndominium just might be your dream home! Building a home that works for you and all your needs makes life that much easier.

  1. Howdy! This post couldn’t be written any better! Looking at this article
reminds me of my previous roommate! He constantly kept talking about this.
I am going to send this information to him. Pretty sure he’s going to have a great read.

    I appreciate you for sharing!

    1. Thank you! Wow, yes I can imagine that is hard to find! Ours has potential to be 4 bedrooms as the loft can easily be framed in to make a fourth, good sized bedroom. You may have to do your own custom design for that.

  2. Do you have designs that actually include a “Barn Area”? I have horses and would like living quarters on opposite sides of the structure 🙂

    1. We just have the one set of plans that we designed for our home. They can be customized to fit your needs though. The shop portion and drive-through bay could absolutely be turned into a barn area!

  3. I love your Barndominiium. Could you please let me know if there were other items aside from the plans you sell that you needed (I understand that cities/states) have different rules, but based on what you have here. Were there engineering drawings that you needed to also have drawn up or what other potential pieces did you need?
    Thank you in advance!

    1. Hi Iris! Thank you. There are a few other engineered drawings you would need but that is why we have now partnered with Back Forty Buildings. You can find our plans available on their website and they can help you through the entire build journey as well as do any customizations you would like!

    1. There are 3 rooms framed into the shop portion of the home and one of those rooms is what we turned into our meat processing room! You should be able to find those rooms included in the plans and can then turn them into whatever you want!

  4. Hi CMB, I’m wondering what the dimensions/footage is of your barndo? Looks like your plans link doesn’t work by the way… 🙁

    1. Hi! We have partnered with Back Forty Buildings to give you the best support possible in building a Barndo! You can find our plans and info about them here now!
